How can I get my son to wear hats?

My son is 19 months old and for as long as he's been able to, he will remove a hat the second it's placed on his head. How can I get him to keep it on his head especially when all the ones I see with tie-ons are quite frankly old fashioned! Anyone know any good brands with tie on hats or other alternatives?

I think the simple answer is, you can't! I had the same problem and just made sure that she had plenty of suncream on. I did find that the less you fuss about it, the longer the hat stayed on. Oddly enough, she wore her swimming hat with the long back bit for most of the time when she was in and out of the water. Maybe try one like that? Ax

I was always told just to keep trying with the hat. Keep on trying! One day it finally clicked for us but I think that was after our daughter had started nursery when she could see all the other children wearing their hats too. We have the same problem with hairbands and hairclips which only last a matter of seconds

Noah hated hats to begin with, and refused to wear them. Just keep trying different ones - as soon as he thought he was getting to choose one as a present he wanted to wear it! :)

Haha exactly like my 19 month old to a T!! When you find out, let me know because I've tried everything, even distracting him with something else. That only works for a few minutes though :-(

In time he will probably get used to it or if you keep putting it back on he will give up! Getting one with a character one that he likes will help x

Just keep trying. One of my boys always pulled his baseball cap off but was fine with a fisherman style sun hat, so you could just try a different style, or maybe let him choose.

Persistence! Keep putting it back on. Let them choose their own hat. Explain that no hat=no outdoor fun and follow through with the threat if they refuse to wear it.
